How it works

Enter belt speed and the machine's incline percentage, then select Walking or Running. The calculator expresses grade as a decimal and applies it to the selected ACSM equation.

Formula

Running VO₂ = 0.2 × speed + 0.9 × speed × grade + 3.5. Walking uses 0.1 and 1.8 coefficients. Speed is meters per minute and grade is incline ÷ 100.

Example

At the same 8 km/h speed, changing incline from 1% to 5% increases the estimated oxygen demand, while pace and belt distance remain unchanged.

FAQ

Is 1% incline always equal to outdoor running?

No. Wind, surface, temperature, machine calibration, and the runner all matter. This page compares equation inputs; it does not prescribe a training grade.
